On Friday 13th February, Ballyhoura Development CLG hosted a Motanka Doll Workshop in Charleville Library, welcoming eight participants for an afternoon of creativity, culture and connection.

The workshop introduced attendees to the traditional Ukrainian Motanka craft - a symbolic, handmade doll traditionally created as a protective charm. In a relaxed and welcoming setting, participants learned about the history and meaning behind the craft before creating their own unique dolls to take home.

Celebrating Culture Through Community

The Motanka doll is more than a decorative object; it represents protection, wellbeing and continuity of tradition. Through hands-on learning, the group explored the symbolism woven into each element of the doll — from the fabrics used to the distinctive cross-thread face.

Workshops like this highlight the importance of cultural exchange and community connection, supporting Ballyhoura Development’s ongoing commitment to inclusion and cultural awareness across the region.
