The East Limerick Traveller Project recently played a key role in the launch of a new suite of Traveller-led substance use awareness resources, developed to support Traveller families across the Mid West.

Launched at the South Court Hotel in May, the initiative was developed by members of the Traveller community from Limerick, Cork and North Tipperary. The resources aim to raise awareness of substance use, encourage open conversations around addiction and recovery, and highlight the range of family support services available to those affected.

The campaign is an initiative of the Traveller Regional Drug and Alcohol Network (TRDAN), bringing together Primary Healthcare for Traveller Projects, the HSE Mid West Social Inclusion Service and the Mid West Regional Drug and Alcohol Forum. Developed through collaboration with Traveller communities, the resources are designed to provide accessible, culturally relevant information and encourage greater engagement with available supports.

The campaign includes two new information leaflets, covering the risks associated with tablets and available family support services, alongside an updated series of short videos titled Give It Up, which promote positive conversations around substance use and recovery within Traveller communities.

The East Limerick Traveller Project played a pivotal role in both the launch and subsequent media engagement. Crystal Ward from the East Limerick Primary Healthcare Project acted as MC at the launch event and later appeared alongside Jim Finn, Chair of the Mid West Regional Drug and Alcohol Forum, on Limerick Today on Live 95. During the interview, Crystal highlighted the importance of collaboration and Traveller-led initiatives in improving awareness of, and access to, vital support services.
