Peter Robinson Settlers Emigration Scheme Conference and Concert to Anchor Ireland Canada Homecoming 2025 As part of the landmark Ireland Canada Homecoming 2025, two key commemoration events will take place - the Peter Robinson Settlers Emigration Scheme Concert on Friday, September 19th at 8pm followed by the Peter Robinson Settlers Emigration Scheme Conference on Saturday, September 20th , at the historic Saint George’s Arts and Heritage Centre in Mitchelstown, County Cork. These pivotal events commemorate the 200th anniversary of the emigration of the Peter Robinson Settlers from Ireland to Canada, a journey that forged enduring transatlantic ties and shaped communities on both sides of the ocean. The weekend begins with a vibrant Commemoration Concert on Culture Night, Friday, 19 September. Hosted at Saint George’s, this special evening of traditional Irish music, song, and dance will honour the legacy of the Peter Robinson settlers and over two centuries of emigration history. The concert features performances by Ceoltóirí Mhúscraí, representing Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann, Ballincollig – Craobh Niall Ó Cathasaigh. Audiences will be immersed in the rich cultural traditions that connect Ireland and Canada, in a setting steeped in history and community spirit. Hosted by Ballyhoura Development in collaboration with Saint George’s Arts and Heritage Centre, the conference is a cornerstone of a week-long programme of cultural, historical, and genealogical events honouring the legacy of the settlers who left the Ballyhoura region in 1823 & 1825 in search of new beginnings in Canada. Ambassador of Canada to Ireland Dennis King states:“The story of the Peter Robinson Settlers is an under-appreciated chapter in the broader history of Irish migration to Canada. The Conference will be a fantastic opportunity for national and local leaders, Ballyhoura region residents, and descendants of the Settlers to develop their understanding and support the legacy of that unique and remarkably successful emigration scheme. The Embassy of Canada enthusiastically supports Ballyhoura Development’s efforts in organizing the Conference and the broader Gathering, and I look forward to attending and participating in those valuable exchanges.” The conference will feature a distinguished panel of speakers from Ireland, Canada, and the United States, including historians, genealogists, archaeologists, and descendants of the original settlers. Topics will explore the historical context of the emigration, the lives and legacies of the settlers, and the cultural connections that continue to thrive today. Highlights include: Opening Address by An Taoiseach Micheál Martin TD and Welcome by His Excellency Dennis King, Ambassador to Ireland from Canada Keynotes from leading scholars such as Dr. Jay Roszman, Gerard Moran, Dr. Jane McGaughey, Bill Power and Dennis Carter-Edwards Genealogical insights from Glenn O’Meara, Matt Barry, and Dr. Jane Halloran Reflections on memory, identity, and commemoration from Christy Roche, John Tierney, Chris Nikkel, and others Chairperson of Saint George’s Arts and Heritage Centre Bill Power states:“We are delighted to host this conference which will be the most important event of its kind ever held in this region. Saint George’s Arts and Heritage Centre is a prime example of how community spirit can bring people together, just as the Peter Robinson Settlers came together in the 1820s to create opportunity for themselves and future generations, and a new spirit of hope. We are honoured to welcome descendants, historians and friends from both sides of the Atlantic, to reflect on this unique moment of history that shaped the lives of so many for generations to come. The conference will be stimulating and enjoyable, and will remember as well as reflect on the shared connections between Ireland and Canada” The events will also showcase the remarkable restoration of Saint George’s, a Georgian-era church now transformed into a vibrant arts and heritage centre, symbolising the resilience and renewal at the heart of the Homecoming. The Ireland Canada Homecoming 2025 includes a rich programme of tours, concerts, and commemorative events from 15–21 September, culminating in the conference and a special ceremony at Griston Bog & Woodland on 21 September.
