Step by Step: Social Dancing Brings Connection and Wellbeing to North Cork The North Cork Rural Community Health Project, delivered by Ballyhoura Development, recently supported two highly successful social dancing programmes in Charleville and Shanballymore, bringing people together through movement, music and shared experience. Dancing in the Community As part of the initiative, Ballyhoura Development CLG was delighted to deliver two series of inclusive adult dance classes, facilitated by Gina of Come Dance with Gina. In Charleville, inclusive adult dance classes took place in St Joseph’s Foundation, where participants engaged in a fun and supportive environment tailored to encourage participation and enjoyment. A second series of social dancing classes was also held in Shanballymore, welcoming members of the wider community to take part. Fun, Inclusive and Energising Both programmes were very well attended and received extremely positive feedback. Participants had the opportunity to learn a variety of dance styles, including: Waltz Cha cha Samba Line dancing The sessions created a warm, welcoming space where everyone could take part at their own pace, regardless of experience. More Than Just Dance Social dancing offers benefits far beyond learning new steps. It supports: Physical health – improving cardiovascular fitness, balance and coordination Mental wellbeing – enhancing memory, focus and cognitive function through rhythm and movement Social connection – building confidence, reducing isolation and strengthening community ties These programmes highlight the value of creative, community-based initiatives in supporting overall wellbeing and inclusion across North Cork. Delivered through the North Cork Rural Community Health Project, these classes are part of Ballyhoura Development’s ongoing commitment to promoting accessible, inclusive activities that support physical, mental and social wellbeing in rural communities.
