Ballyhoura Leads the Way in Biodiversity Education Through Community Study Circles As part of the EU-funded SHARED GREEN DEAL project, Ballyhoura hosted a year-long Biodiversity Study Circle, bringing local people together through nature walks, workshops, and creative activities to explore local biodiversity. Over the course of a year, local participants came together monthly to learn, share, and reflect on biodiversity through nature walks, workshops, and creative activities. The Ballyhoura Study Circle focused on making biodiversity tangible—exploring native species, learning about the traditional uses of plants, and even hosting a photography exhibition to celebrate local ecosystems. Part of a European collaboration Ballyhoura Development proudly participated in a European initiative exploring how community-led learning can foster deeper connections with nature. Ballyhoura hosted one of four Study Circles on Biodiversity across Europe, alongside partners in Slovenia, Sweden, and Greece. What the Study Circle achieved The results were inspiring. Participants reported: Increased awareness of local biodiversity Stronger community bonds through shared learning and outdoor experiences A renewed commitment to protecting nature Teachers, retirees, and community members alike became ambassadors for biodiversity, sharing their knowledge with schools, families, and neighbours. “A powerful example of how community-led learning can spark real environmental change.” Looking ahead This initiative reinforced the power of non-formal learning and community engagement in driving environmental change. Ballyhoura Development is proud to be part of this movement and looks forward to supporting more local actions that connect people with the natural world. For those who would like to dive deeper into the research behind the Study Circles, the SHARED GREEN DEAL partners have published a comprehensive report: Exploring the Study Circle Approach in Fostering Change in Biodiversity Values Among AdultsThis report presents findings and recommendations from four Study Circles held across Europe (Ireland, Slovenia, Sweden, and Greece). It highlights how non-formal, community-based learning can shift cultural values, inspire behaviour change, and strengthen biodiversity preservation. 👉 Download the full report (PDF) Find Out More About Shared Green Deal Project Manage Cookie Preferences
